As a self-professed compost nerd, I am thrilled to try out the Monty compost monitor. I love everything about composting—the process, the benefits, and the opportunity to help others learn about it. I am also passionate about technology, especially mobile phones, apps, and user interfaces. So when I heard about Monty, I knew it was a match made in heaven. You can check out my brief unboxing clip at the bottom of this post.
I reached out to the team at Monty (www.montycompost.co) to see if they would be willing to send me a unit to test in the UK. They only ship to Australia and the US, but the founder, Ashley, was happy to make an exception for me. I paid for the unit and shipping myself so that I could share my honest thoughts about the product without any outside influence.
Now that I have my Monty Compost Monitor, I am eager to get started. I have some preparation to do before I can set it up, but I wanted to share some initial information about Monty before I get going.
What is Monty?
Monty Monitor is a compost coach that effortlessly handles your compost management. It tracks, manages, and analyses your compost to help you waste less and compost more.
What does Monty do?
Monty uses temperature, gas, and moisture sensors to deliver readings every 15 minutes. This gives you a 24/7 view of what is happening in your compost.
Monty also provides custom, data-driven recommendations and notifications to help you compost better. You can follow Monty's advice to avoid smells, pests, and other problems that can lead to an unhealthy compost pile.
The Monty Mobile app
The Monty Mobile app is the central hub for your compost management. You can use the app to:
- View real-time data on your compost
- Get custom recommendations and notifications
- Set up alerts
- Track your progress

My initial thoughts on the device…
So, I briefly had a quick open and inspection of Monty and my first impressions are that the packaging is solid, extremely solid and there was only a slight dink in the packaging that came from Australia to Cambridgeshire with only a lightweight bag around the box, so that’s great to know that the contents are well looked after in the packaging. That packaging is pretty minimalist which I like, and the USB cable and wireless chagrin pad were neatly tucked away.
The device is sturdy, lightweight, but sturdy. Personally, I love the design - it looks cool and as I’ve already said - I cannot wait to start!
